Sample Survey – Community Attitudes to Electronic Gaming Machines

Introduction

The introduction provides the background information of the survey (why is it being conducted, who is being surveyed, where will the results be used). This section needs to provide enough information for the participant to make an informed decision as to their participation. This section should also provide information on the anonymity of the participant (will their comments be publicly displayed, or will results be aggregated and therefore anonymous?). Note that the introductory wording of the survey must identify all potential community benefits of the application ( including the fact that proposals often include ‘hotel with EGMs’ OR ‘no hotel’).

Demographic Information: gathers general information about the participant.eg. name, age, gender, postcode, household income, length of residence in area, household structure. Possible response categories are usually provided.

Community Satisfaction: asks general questions around current community satisfaction (happiness and contentment) – can be used as a benchmark and compared with answers regarding impact of EGMs on levels of community satisfaction.

Gaming Habits: establishes if the participant uses EGMs, where they use EGMs and the impact of EGM use on levels of satisfaction in the community. This variable can be used to split results when analysing.

Awareness of Application: was the participant previously aware of the application, do they visit the venue, do they have any prior connection to the venue? These questions can used to determine how much people actually know about the proposal.

Support for Refurbishment: A survey must provide all relevant information about the possible community benefits of the application i.e. all community contributions noted by the applicant. Where surveys have failed to provide this information they have been criticised as biasing responses.

Support for EGMs: does the participant support the application for EGMs as a part of the venue refurbishment or new venue development? Do they still support the introduction of EGMs if the venue refurbishment and community contributions will only go ahead if they EGMs are installed? Would the introduction/addition of EGMs alter respondents’ level of community satisfaction?
